ObMicroscopicSmallHack:

figuring out why atoroot made my background uniformly white. Changing

> xsetroot -bg gray -fg white -bitmap $TMP3

to

  xsetroot -bg black -fg white -bitmap $TMP3

did the trick (this on a monochrome system).
